Unity in Diversity: The History and Significance of "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika"

Updated: Feb 14

Indonesia is a country with a rich cultural heritage and a diverse population of over 270 million people, making it the fourth most populous country in the world. Despite this diversity, Indonesians have long embraced the principle of "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika," which translates to "Unity in Diversity" in English. This phrase has become synonymous with Indonesia's national identity and reflects the country's commitment to inclusivity and harmony among its diverse population.

The origins of "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika" can be traced back to the 14th century, during the Majapahit Kingdom in Java. Mpu Tantular, a Buddhist scholar and poet, wrote the Kakawin Sutasoma, an epic poem that espouses the principles of tolerance, harmony, and peaceful coexistence among people of different religions and cultural backgrounds. The famous line "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, Tan Hana Dharma Mangrwa" is taken from this poem and has since become a symbol of unity amidst diversity.

Indonesia's founding fathers recognized the importance of this principle and chose "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika" as the country's national motto during the struggle for independence from Dutch colonial rule. The phrase was later incorporated into the country's national emblem, reflecting the country's commitment to diversity and inclusivity.

Today, "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika" is more than just a national motto; it is a way of life for many Indonesians. The phrase represents the country's unique cultural heritage and the spirit of togetherness that exists among its people. Despite the challenges posed by political, religious, and ethnic differences, Indonesians continue to embrace the principle of "Unity in Diversity" as a guiding principle for their country's future.
