Handojo Simodihardjo, an artist based in Yogyakarta, central Java, Indonesia, has recently been focusing on translating the visualization work of Kakawin Sutasoma, a poem in old Javanese language. His process involves utilizing toothpicks and bamboo needles, specially crafted by himself, along with Chinese ink on paper technique and mixed media, has been ongoing since 2010 and has now reached a length of around 35 meters and a height of 1.5 meters. Even now, it is still in the process of being completed. This kind of dedication creating such a masterpiece that need to be shown in the world.

 

The traditional yet surrealistic Wayang Beber (scroll painting) of Sutasoma meets a contemporary, colorful figure that clashes brutally, with layered details overlapping without spatial boundaries, filling each other. This artist capable of producing works that differ in pattern, color, curvature, and detail.

 

Over 20 years of experience living in Bali, Handojo has expertise in various fields such as fashion design, construction, and architecture. Handojo's works carry more weight due to the intriguing combination rarely considered or executed by other artists. The deep spiritual immersion and profound philosophy behind every emerging idea make each of his works astonishing, with clear messages conveyed to the audience..

 

On the other hand, he also works on contemporary sculptures made from plastic waste and other materials, with different styles, or still translates traditional styles into contemporary ones, tending towards Folkart. Many wild ideas are neatly stored as sketches awaiting execution, whether in the form of sculptures or collage drawings.
